Nagpur: Finally the heavy downpour lashed Nagpur city and nearby areas increasing water table of Kanhan river, Ambazari lake and Gorewada lake too. Due to rain now the Kanhan river is flowing with full river bed covered. The greenish colour of water has vanished and river water has taken new brownish (turbid) colour. The colour is brownish with inlet turbidity of 500 NTU.

The water treatment at Kanhan Water Treatment Plant is absolutely under control now with negligible outlet turbidity.

If these rains continues for next three to four days and river gets its flow, then the situation will came back to normal soon and residents of North, South and parts of East nagpur will start receiving crystal clear (No haziness anymore) water at their taps.

Meanwhile, Senior Journalist Sanjay Deshmukh who has received hazy water since last 4/5 days stated that the water supplied is initially hazy. But that has not resulted into health complaints for anyone in our family. However, as a precaution, we are using alum and drinking boiled -cooled water.”

Similar are the reactions of people residing in Norh, South and east Nagpur wherein due to scanty rainfall, the raw water colour of Kanhan River has suddenly changed this week & become almost greenish. Hence, the water received at the consumer end is also whitish and hazy.

In this regard, experts from NEERI visited Kanhan WTP, ESRs and some consumer houses to collect samples. The reports for the same will be arriving soon. However, prima facie, the experts have opined that the water is fit for drinking purpose.

Here are reactions from some consumers about water supply in these days from Kanhan WTP …

It may be mentioned here, for the first time ever in history of Kanhan River, because of scanty rainfall, the raw water colour of Kanhan River has suddenly changed this week & become almost greenish which is sign of too much dissolved algae or organics in water, following which residents of North, East and parts of South Nagpur had received slight hazy (whitish) water supply in last few days.

The Scientists of Water Technology Department of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) carried out sampling and testing of the water samples from the Kanhan River raw water source to the faucet yesterday.

NMC-OCW also appeals residents of North, East and parts of South Nagpur to co-operate as it is natural issue.

NMC-OCW has already initiated many actions to ensure good quality; potable water reaches every household of citizens of Nagpur.
