Chandra Takes Aim at Ambani, Reliance Hits Back: Is a Bigger Corporate Battle Emerging?Mumbai: A rare and unusually public corporate confrontation has erupted between two of India’s most prominent business names, with Essel Group chairman Subhash Chandra taking direct aim at Reliance-linked media entities and the Reliance Group responding by calling his remarks “baseless”.

The exchange has raised a larger question in corporate and media circles: Is this simply Subhash Chandra fighting to defend his reputation, or is a much bigger corporate battle beginning to emerge around Mukesh Ambani and the Reliance Group?

Reliance, in a media statement issued on August 28, said it had noted with “dismay” Chandra’s remarks and strongly denied the allegations and insinuations against media entities that are part of the Reliance Group.

“Our media brands have never been used to attack anyone, nor will they ever be,” the Reliance spokesperson said. The group also said it holds Chandra “in high regard as a businessman and entrepreneur” and wished him well.

The statement marks an unusually direct response from Reliance to allegations made by another major Indian business promoter.

What triggered the confrontation?

The immediate backdrop is the controversy surrounding Chandra’s personal insolvency proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

The tribunal has approved a repayment plan under which around ₹6.25-6.5 crore is to be paid against admitted claims of approximately ₹22,006.57 crore. On the face of it, that translates into recovery of only about 0.03 per cent and a nearly 99.97 per cent haircut.

The enormous headline figure, however, has been disputed by Chandra.

He says he did not personally borrow the money and was involved in the proceedings as a personal guarantor for loans taken by various Essel Group-linked borrowing entities.

According to Chandra, while total claims filed in the proceedings amounted to ₹22,006 crore, the claims of lenders actually objecting to his repayment plan totalled about ₹3,992 crore. Of that, he says ₹620 crore has already been settled, leaving approximately ₹3,372 crore.

The distinction is crucial because the ₹22,006-crore figure is being widely interpreted as Chandra’s personal outstanding debt, whereas the legal proceedings concern guarantees given by him for borrowings by other entities.

The controversy is not over yet. HDFC Bank and LIC Housing Finance are planning to challenge the NCLT ruling, adding another legal chapter to the dispute.

But then came the attack on Reliance

Chandra has alleged that certain media houses were presenting the NCLT matter selectively and spreading what he described as incorrect information about his case.

He specifically pointed towards Reliance-linked media entities, prompting the extraordinary response from the Reliance Group.

This is where the story moves beyond an insolvency dispute.

Chandra’s allegations bring back memories of the bitter Zee-Reliance-Invesco episode, when the future ownership and control of Zee’s media business became the subject of a high-profile corporate battle.

Reliance had previously acknowledged discussions concerning a possible combination involving Zee and Reliance’s media interests, while denying that it was pursuing a hostile takeover. Invesco had also been involved in discussions surrounding a possible transaction.

For Chandra, that history provides an important backdrop to his present allegations.

For Reliance, however, the answer is unequivocal: the allegations concerning its media businesses are baseless.

Is Subhash Chandra a pawn?

This is perhaps the most intriguing question – but also the one that requires the most caution.

There is currently no publicly established evidence that Subhash Chandra is acting as a “pawn” for another business group or that another corporate player is using him to target Mukesh Ambani.

But it is a question worth asking.

Why has a businessman who is himself fighting a major insolvency battle suddenly chosen to take on one of India’s most powerful corporate groups?

Why has Reliance responded so directly?

And why has an old Zee-Reliance chapter suddenly become relevant again?

Those questions do not prove a conspiracy. But they do make the episode more significant than an ordinary corporate spat.

Why the timing matters

The confrontation also comes at an important moment for Reliance.

The group’s media, telecom, digital and consumer businesses have expanded dramatically, while its Jio Platforms business is moving towards a proposed public listing. The wider Reliance ecosystem is therefore entering another major phase of corporate transformation.

Against that backdrop, allegations concerning media influence, corporate competition and the treatment of a former media rival are bound to attract attention.

The question is not whether Reliance has the right to deny the allegations – it clearly does.

The real question is whether more evidence, documents or counter-allegations emerge from either side.

Two tycoons, one unusually public confrontation

India has witnessed many bitter corporate battles. But they have generally played out through boardrooms, shareholder meetings, regulatory filings and courtrooms rather than through direct public exchanges between two major promoters.

This episode is different.

On one side is Subhash Chandra, the founder of the Zee and Essel empire, now fighting to defend his financial and professional legacy.

On the other is Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group, one of India’s most powerful corporate conglomerates, which has categorically rejected Chandra’s allegations.

And sitting in the middle is India’s extraordinarily influential media and corporate landscape.

That is why the bigger question cannot simply be dismissed:

Is Subhash Chandra fighting his own battle – or has his battle become part of a much larger contest over Reliance’s growing corporate and media power?

At this stage, the answer is unknown.

What is known is that Chandra has opened the door, and Reliance has now publicly walked through it with a denial.

The next move could determine whether this remains a one-day war of words – or becomes the beginning of a much larger corporate confrontation.

The allegations made by Subhash Chandra remain allegations and have not been independently established. Reliance has strongly denied them.
