Nagpur: Street crimes continue to trouble Nagpur with robbers looting cash and valuables worth lakhs of rupees from citizens. After a brief lull, the chain-snatchers have once again become active in the city.
On Thursday, two-wheeler-borne robbers snatched gold chains worth lakhs of rupees from six women in separate incidents in Tehsil, Hudkeshwar, Sakkardara, Bajaj Nagar, and Beltarodi areas within a span of two hours in broad daylight. The sudden spurt in chain-snatching incidents in the Second Capital has now left the city police baffled. Though police claim that they have intensified street patrolling ahead of Lok Sabha elections, the robbers are having a free run.
A series of chain snatchings by two bike-borne individuals has put Nagpur police on high alert. Using Google maps to navigate, these robbers targeted at least six women, primarily elderly, across various locations on Thursday. Despite the police’s efforts, including setting up checkpoints and sealing exits, the culprits remain at large.
The crime spree began near Nikalas temple around 8.15am when a 42-year-old woman from Jabalpur, Bharti Salunkhe, was robbed as she got off an auto-rickshaw. The chain snatchers then moved to Hudkeshwar, where they snatched a gold chain from 36-year-old Priti Shirke at Shravasti Nagar.
In the same area, 72-year-old Urmila Tijare became another victim. The spree continued as 66-year-old Asha Thool was robbed while walking to a shop, and Kanchan Satpute faced a similar fate on her way to school. Another incident was reported at Bajaj Nagar.
The police, who lost track of the robbers near Nagpur railway station, suspect that they might have fled the city by train. CCTV footage is being scrutinized, and it appears that the robbers were not familiar with the city, relying heavily on Google maps for navigation. The motorcycle used is suspected to have been stolen, aiding them in their swift escape after each incident.
Reports of robberies have been filed at Tehsil, Hudkeshwar, Sakkardara, Bajaj Nagar, and Beltarodi police stations. The police are determined to apprehend the culprits and are calling for public assistance in identifying the suspects from CCTV footage. The community has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
