Centre outlines policy measures to maintain standards of education in IITs

 Underlining the policy measures initiated by Central Government to maintain standards of education, the Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani told Rajya Sabha that the Government has set up eight new IITs in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh during the XI Plan. The new IITs are functioning from temporary campuses with adequate infrastructure such as classrooms, labs, equipment and hostels, informed the Minister.

In a written reply, Smriti Irani said that the Government provides budgetary support to these institutes on priority basis to develop and maintain required infrastructure. “The institutes have been given full powers to recruit faculty and non-faculty staff within the prescribed ratio of 1:1.1:10. Government also provides regulatory and policy support to help them attract quality faculty. Mobility of faculty from one Central Educational Institute to another, engagement of contract/adjunct/visiting faculty and relaxation in salary limit from US$ 25,000 to US$ 14,000 for employment Visa to foreign faculty are some of the policy measures taken by the Government to maintain standards of education,” stated Union Human Resource Development Minister.
