Nagpur: The death of two labourers in a blast following leakage of ammonia gas at Balaji Ice Factory at Uppalwadi, Nagpur, in January this year has finally been registered as a crime under bailable provisions of the law for causing death due to negligence.

The offence was registered at Kapil Nagar Police Station against factory owner Vijay Sahu on Wednesday. Until now, the case had remained a mere accident for around six months. The explosion had been so devastating that several buildings in the vicinity and vehicles had their glass windows shattered. The residents of Uppalwadi were gripped in panic after the blast.

Media reports said the delay in registering the offence was due to the prolonged wait for the report of the Factory Inspector. After submitting a copy to the Collector office, the Factory Inspector’s report was supposed to reach the police first. The report reached the Kapil Nagar police station after a prolonged delay for unknown reasons, the reports added.

The deaths at Solar Industries at Kondhali, and the latest explosion at Chamundi Explosives in Nagpur had triggered a debate in the Assembly session, with the Opposition cornering the State Government over slack surveillance and monitoring leading to the deaths of 18 labourers in the two incidents.

In the Ice Factory case, Dugarsingh Rawat (70) and Guman Luman Singh (45), had died while co-workers Shravan Baghel (44), and Raja Arya (23), were seriously injured.
