Mumbai/Nagpur: The Adarsh Housing Society, an illegal Mumbai apartment building that became a symbol of political corruption must be demolished, said the Bombay High Court today.

The Adarsh Housing Society was built in the heart of the financial capital to house veterans and war widows, but a probe found politicians, ministers and bureaucrats had been granted apartments cheaply, leading to the sacking of Ashok Chavan as Maharashtra Chief Minister. Three of his relatives had been given apartments in the 31-storey building.

Months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi swept to power in 2014, Maharashtra chose his party, the BJP, to replace the Congress in the state election as well.

The BJP government of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently sanctioned the prosecution of Ashok Chavan, who is a Congress Parliamentarian.
