CHANDIGARH/NAGPUR: Ludhiana Police on Tuesday detained four Bangladeshi suspects in connection with the March 14 rape of nun in Ranaghat in West Bengal and cases of robbery and foreign money transactions worth several crores.
Their detention comes five days after two key accused Mohammed Salim Sheik and Gopal Sarkar were arrested by West Bengal Police in Mumbai and Delhi.
Bengal police had circulated photos of four culprits to state police authorities across the country.
The police were trying to ascertain the role of the detained four in the March 14 incident.
“They are part of the same gang under which two key rape accused had been arrested. These four men have committed crimes of burglary, theft and defrauding people of foreign currency” said Ludhiana ADCP crime Mukhwinder Singh. Names of the four detained were confirmed as Salim, Habibul, Aslam Sohad and Jinnat.
The four men are illegal immigrants and were also wanted in the cases of extortion, fraud, illegal transfer of foreign currency in Punjab.
The Ludhiana Police were yet to register an FIR into the case.
All of them are in their late 20s.
The police said that they had rented out a two-storey accomodation on Chandigarh Ludhiana state highway but would use it as a transit arrangement to travel between different states.
“They had been in direct touch with some of Bangladeshis who are employed as workers in various industries in textiles and garments” said official.
