Nagpur: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday appointed Maharashtra Revenue Minister and senior leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule as the party’s in-charge for the upcoming local body elections across the State, which are being held after a gap of three years.

The announcement was made by State BJP President Ravindra Chavan during a key party meeting attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and senior leaders. The meeting focused on the BJP’s election strategy and coordination within the Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction).

Expressing confidence about the alliance’s prospects, Bawankule asserted that the Mahayuti would secure 51 per cent of the votes and register a two-thirds majority in the polls. “We will ensure that the Mahayuti wins all local body elections in Maharashtra, including Municipal Corporations, Zilla Parishads, Municipal Councils, and Nagar Panchayats, with an overwhelming majority,” he declared.

Chief Minister Fadnavis directed district-level in-charges to maintain unity within the alliance and avoid public criticism of partner parties. To strengthen coordination, Bawankule announced the formation of a three-member coordination committee in each district, comprising one minister each from the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP.

“We will make sure that there are no differences or disputes among Mahayuti partners. Our goal is to work as one team and deliver a decisive victory,” Bawankule said, exuding confidence ahead of the high-stakes local body polls.

The State Election Commission (SEC) last week announced that elections for 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats will be held on December 2, and counting of votes will take place on December 3. The polls, to be conducted using EVMs, will elect 6,859 members and 288 council presidents. A total of 1.7 crore eligible voters, including 53.8 lakh men, 53.2lakh women, and 775 others, will exercise their franchise across 13,355 polling centres and 3,820 wards.

Of the total seats, 3,492 are reserved for women, 895 for Scheduled Castes, 338 for Scheduled Tribes, and 1,821 for OBCs.
