Nagpur: In the year 2023, Nagpur’s rural areas witnessed a concerning rise in road accidents, with significant contributing factors being bad road conditions, human errors, traffic offenses, and heavy traffic congestion. A detailed analysis of the integrated road accident database for 2023 reveals critical insights into the causes and consequences of these accidents.
Increase in accidents due to bad roads: The number of accidents attributed to bad road conditions surged dramatically by over 150% in 2023 compared to the previous year. In 2022, there were 60 accidents due to bad roads, while this figure soared to 156 in 2023.
Decrease in total rural accidents: Despite the increase in accidents caused by bad roads, the overall number of road accidents in rural Nagpur decreased from 1,130 in 2022 to 989 in 2023.
Causes of accidents: Human errors and traffic offenses were primary contributors to accidents in 2023, accounting for 629 and 360 accidents, respectively. Distracted driving emerged as a significant concern, leading to 208 accidents, including 88 fatal crashes and 108 fatalities. Vehicle defects were responsible for 63 accidents, resulting in 27 fatal crashes and claiming 38 lives. Bad roads directly caused 156 crashes, leading to 78 fatalities. Other contributing factors included blind turns (32 accidents, 16 fatal), and open/uneven manhole covers (6 accidents, 5 fatal).
Heavy traffic related accidents: Accidents due to heavy traffic witnessed a substantial increase in 2023 compared to 2022. In 2023, 93 accidents (including 35 fatal crashes) resulted in 46 fatalities, compared to 12 accidents in 2022 claiming 9 lives.

A significant portion of accidents occurred between 6 pm and 9 pm in both 2022 and 2023. In 2023, 273 accidents (including 113 fatal ones) resulted in 122 fatalities during this time period, compared to 330 accidents and 162 fatalities in 2022.
The data highlights the pressing need for comprehensive measures to address road safety issues in Nagpur’s rural areas. Efforts must focus on improving road infrastructure, enforcing traffic regulations, addressing driver distractions, and managing heavy traffic flow. Additionally, targeted interventions should aim to mitigate the specific risks associated with bad road conditions, vehicle defects, and other contributing factors identified in the analysis. By prioritizing these areas, authorities can work towards reducing the frequency and severity of road accidents, ultimately saving lives and ensuring safer roadways for all.
