Nagpur: In an audacious act, an auto driver ran his vehicle over a police constable and dragged him when the cop signalled to stop the speeding auto. The incident occurred at the busy Samvidhan Chowk (RBI Square) on Tuesday afternoon. The offending auto driver has been arrested.

The victim Police Constable, Dattatray Gangaram Valvatkar (50), attached to South Zone Traffic Branch, was on duty at Samvidhan Chowk around 3 pm on Tuesday. The cop saw the auto (MH-31-CU 8965) being driven recklessly and immediately signalled the driver to stop his auto and take it by the roadside. Initially, the auto driver, Sheikh Asif Sheikh Gafar (22), pretended to be stopping his auto but suddenly drove his vehicle towards the Traffic Police Constable and ran over him. The speeding auto dragged Dattatray to a distance but the cop did not slacken his hold on the vehicle forcing the auto to stop. When the auto stopped, the driver was taken into custody for further action.

Sitabuldi PSI Puri, based on a complaint of Police Constable Valvatkar, booked the auto driver under Section 353 and placed him under arrest.
