
Nagpur: Army Day, observed annually on January 15, commemorates the Indian Army’s complete military independence from British rule, marked by the appointment of Field Marshal K M Cariappa as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief in 1949.
In the run-up to the celebrations, a series of outreach and commemorative programmes were organised under the aegis of Headquarters Uttar Maharashtra and Gujarat Sub Area to mark the occasion. The events included an inter-school quiz competition conducted by noted quiz master Col V Shankar, SC (Retd) at Army Public School, Kamptee, aimed at fostering awareness and interest in the armed forces among students.
An interaction session between Maj Gen N S Sohal, General Officer Commanding, Uttar Maharashtra and Gujarat Sub Area, and armed forces veterans was held at the historic Sitabuldi Fort, providing a platform to honour their service and share experiences. Blood donation camps were also organised at Military Hospital (MH) Kamptee and MH Vadodara as part of the celebrations.
In addition, sporting and fitness activities, including a walkathon for families and children, were conducted at the Nagpur and Kamptee Military Stations, witnessing enthusiastic participation.
According to a press release issued by R Kannan, Group Captain and Defence PRO, Nagpur, the series of events successfully instilled a sense of patriotism and pride in the Indian Army among participants while strengthening civil-military bonding.
