Almost a 100 enthusiastic Nagpurians, and some actvists who had come from other parts of Vidarbha too, joined the protest march against American giant Monsanto that began at Constitution square (RBI chowk) at 5 p.m. today.

There were many Organic farmers, students and even Doctors who understand the implications and harmful effects of consuming GM food or crops laden with heavy pesticides.

The point to note is that this march was world wide happening simultaneously in 40 countries and 360 cities.

Nagpur NCP politician and a physician himself Dr. Amol Deshmukh was one of the participants in the march. Speaking to NT, he said that MNCs such as Monsanto just make big claims of higher productivity to make profits leaving farmers debt ridden and often pushed to commiting suicide.

Among those who took part in the procession and were involved in the planning include Shyamala Sanyal, Kirti, Shalini Arora, Sunita Shukla and many young activists of Beejotsav. Vasantrao Futane, well known organic farmer had come from Wardha to be a part of the protest too.

So rattled Monsanto seems by the happenings and NT’s reporting of it, that we received a big rejoinder from their Corporate office in USA asking us to do “fair reporting” and give coverage of their side too.
