Nagpur: Gross negligence on the part of a spine surgeon and a radiologist at the otherwise controversial Shanta Spine Institute in Ramdaspeth resulted in paralysis in a patient. Sitabuldi police have booked both of them for causing paralysis to a patient and also destroying evidence.

The accused doctors have been identified as Dr Manoj Singrakhia, Spine Surgeon and Chief Medical Officer of Shanta Spine Institute, 1st floor, Ashirvad Complex, Central Bazar Road, Near Somalwar High School, Ramdaspeth and Dr R R Khandelwal, Radiologist, Imaging Point, Nikalas Tower, Near Tarun Bharat Press, Ramdaspeth. This is for the second time in two years that Shanta Spine Institute’s name has caught the limelight for medical negligence.

Earlier in October 2014, a woman named Shalini Balinge accused Dr Singrakhia of negligence which resulted in the death of her husband Gangadhar Balinge.

In the latest case, the complainant patient Dinesh Manikrao Mane (32), Resident of Shripurna Layout, Sai Nagar, was suffering from spinal disorder (spinal tumor) and therefore went to Dr Manoj Singrakhia, Spine Surgeon at Shanta Spine Institute for examination between 21.11.2011 and 7.1.2014.

After a thorough check up and doctors decided to admit the patient on 24.11.2011 and performed the surgery to remove spinal tumour. However, since that day, the patient felt senseless in body parts below the waist (paralysis). When the patient Dinesh Mane complained to the accused doctor in this regard, Dr Manoj Singrakhia comforted him and “assured” him that everything will be fine. With these words, the accused doctor continued the treatment.

Shockingly, despite knowing that the surgery went horribly wrong, the accused Dr Manoj Singrakhia went on for second surgery that too keeping the patient in dark. But the second surgery too went wrong and subsequently caused disability (paralysis) to the patient. On the other hand, another accused Dr R R Khandelwal, Radiologist at Imaging Point, in order to cover up the folly of accused spine surgeon, slyly issued the same MRI report but mentioning two different dates. Moreover, when the patient Dinesh Mane demanded the entire case papers for further treatment, the accused doctors “deliberately” damaged the MRI with the clear intention of destroying the evidence.

On the basis of a complaint lodged by the patient Dinesh Mane and a report submitted in this regard by the Dean of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sitabuldi PSI Karmalwar has booked the accused Dr Manoj Singrakhia, Spine Surgeon and Chief Medical Officer of Shanta Spine Institute and Dr R R Khandelwal, Radiologist, Imaging Point under Sections 338, 420, 201, 34 of IPC and launched an in-depth investigation into the matter.
