Another man dies in pyre blaze incident in Nagpur

Nagpur: Another person has died after an accident at the Wathoda cremation ground, where five people were burnt while lighting a funeral pyre.

The latest victim has been identified as Sopan Mahadev Gaikwad (57),a resident of Garoba Maidan. Earlier, Vinod Pundalikrao Munghate (66) of Karve Nagar, Wardha Road, had died from the same incident. The other injured – Dnyaneshwar Gaikwad, Ashok Munghate, and Vitthal Pasarkar –were discharged after treatment.

The accident took place on November 15, during the last rites of Sushilabai Haribhau Munghate (83), a resident of Wathoda. Her body was brought to the Wathoda cremation ground around 4 pm and many relatives had gathered for the funeral. During the preparation of the pyre, diesel was poured to help ignite the fire. When the pyre was lit, the diesel caused sudden, strong flames. The fire spread quickly and the clothes of the relatives standing close to the pyre caught fire.

All five people suffered severe burn injuries. They were immediately rushed to a medical hospital. Among them, Sopan had the most serious burns. His condition worsened, and he was shifted to a private hospital, where he died on Sunday. Police have registered a case based on the statement of the victims’ relative, Saket Gedam. Further inquiry into the accident is underway.
