Another case of sale of new-born uncovered in Nagpur, 2 women held

Nagpur: The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of Nagpur Police Crime Branch unravelled another case of sale of a new born child and nabbed 2 accused women. The gang was also involved in swindling Rs 3 lakh from a Gondia trader by threatening to implicate him in illegal purchase of a child.

The two arrested women have been identified as Rajashree Sen (53) of Shanti Nagar, and Pinki alias Sujata Lande (28), Kalamna. The cops have been in pursuit of the gang that was operating from Nagpur and selling infants to childless couples and pocketing hefty sums. The members of this gang, including the two women, had been netted in the past too.

The fresh case is of May 2023 when the gang lured a poor couple from Pune and brought them to Nagpur. They told the couple that one of their friends is unable to conceive and she needs to adopt their baby. The two women, along with their associates Sachin Patil, Pankaj Kolhe, Priya Patil and Chhaya Meshram prepared bogus adoption papers. The gang meanwhile contacted the Gondia based trader who wanted to adopt the child. The trader was called to the Tehsil office and Sadar for completing the adoption formalities.

However after the trader adopted the child the gang crossed him and threatened to report the matter to police and to remain silent they extorted Rs. 3 lakh from him. The trader lodged a complaint with Nagpur Crime Branch on Wednesday and acting fast the gang was again netted.

The action was taken by Assistant Police Inspector (API) Rekha Sankpal, Samadhan Bajbalkar, HCs Sunil Wakde, Dyaneshwar Dhoke, Manish Paraye, Deepak Bindane, NCPs Arif Sheikh, Rushikesh Dumre, Woman Police Constable Aarti Chavan and Ashwini Khodepawar.
