Alarming deterioration of Nagpur’s air quality demands urgent remedial action

Nagpur: The Second Capital of Maharashtra is facing a critical slide in its ambient air quality as dry weather and plunging night temperatures converge to trap toxic particulate matter across Nagpur. On Tuesday, Nagpur’s Air Quality Index (AQI) surged to a moderate 114, surpassing major industrial and metropolitan hubs such as Mumbai (111) and Chandrapur (97), while trailing closely behind Pune (118) (based on the CPCB bulletin released at 4:00 pm on October 21).

With the festive season approaching and firecracker usage set to spike, experts issue a grave warning: further temperature drops in November will severely amplify pollution, plunging Nagpur into an avoidable environmental and public health crisis unless aggressive enforcement measures are taken immediately.

KEY OBSERVATIONS & POLLUTION HOTSPOTS

1. Unsettling PM10 Peaks in Green Belts: Data from the Pollution Control Board reveals dangerous particulate accumulation across key areas:

* Ambazari & Ram Nagar: 148 µg/m³ (Peak PM10 levels)

* Mahal: 146 µg/m³

* GPO Civil Lines: 132 µg/m³

The dangerously elevated readings in Ambazari and Ram Nagar are deeply alarming given their considerable green cover, indicating that current atmospheric trapping and pollution sources are aggressively overriding natural ecological buffers.

Root Causes of Ambient Degradation: As highlighted by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Regional Officer Hema Deshpande, the primary drivers exacerbating air quality degradation include:

o Unchecked surge in vehicular traffic and emissions.

o Prolonged dry weather conditions coupled with falling night temperatures that hinder pollutant dispersion, causing PM10 to accumulate near ground level.

o Ramping firecracker bursts ahead of Diwali.

o Rampant, unchecked open burning of solid waste and dry leaf litter, exacerbated by irregular municipal waste collection.

3. Municipal Failure Driving Garbage Burning: Residents (such as in Borgaon) report widespread open burning, particularly in early morning hours. Irregular and unreliable municipal collection of dry leaves, plastics, and municipal solid waste is forcing both citizens and sanitation workers into illegal open-air burning, directly fuelling toxic morning smog.

The medical sector reports a direct, severe impact on vulnerable demographics, most notably children and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

• Paediatric Vulnerability: Paediatric pulmonologists report an alarming spike in children suffering from aggravated coughing, severe asthma flare-ups, and prolonged respiratory infections persisting for 10 to 15 days.

• Clinical Intervention: Doctors are forced to restart or scale up inhaler medication and dosage for asthmatic children.

• Medical Advisory: Medical experts strongly urge parents and citizens to strictly avoid dusty environments and secure urgent influenza vaccinations for vulnerable individuals.

To stop Nagpur’s air quality from spiralling further out of control ahead of winter and Diwali, civic and law enforcement authorities must act without delay:

1. Strict Implementation of the Graded Action Plan: Enforcing agencies must immediately execute Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) measures to restrict high-emission activities and regulate heavy vehicular transit.

2. Zero Tolerance for Waste Burning: The municipal authority must establish strict night/morning patrols and heavy fines to completely eliminate illegal open burning of solid waste and dry leaves.

3. Overhaul Waste Collection Services: Ensure uninterrupted, daily collection of leaf litter and recyclable waste across all residential and commercial pockets to eliminate the motivation for open burning.

4. Public Awareness & Green Safeguards: Issue strict public advisories on firecracker restraint and encourage respiratory protection for sensitive groups.
