Nagpur: A large scale business of illegal excavation and transportation of sand has been going on unbridled in entire Nagpur district, against which the Nagpur Today has been voicing time and again. Under the nose of the administration, the sand-mafia not only illegally do excavation the sand from river beds but also sell it openly in the market. The administration now claims that it has come into action to set right the theft of sand and the thieves.
Accordingly, the district administration has set up round-the-clock alert squads to check the theft of sand. As a result, many sand-thieves have been caught so far.
During the past fiscal year 2014-15 as many as 196 cases of illegal business in sand were registered and 292 thieves were arrested in Nagpur district. Further details are as follows: Nagpur city–56 cases, 105 accused arrested; Kamptee–32 cases, 77 arrested; Saoner–28 cases, 52 accused arrested. During past three years 393 cases have been registered and 444 accused arrested. The district administration has taken a pledge that the illegal sand-business would be curbed once and for all.
