Nagpur: As many as 1.34 lakh fatalities in road accidents occur every year and a vast 70 per cent of them being due to drunken driving. Despite prosecution of drunken driving having increased by about seven times in metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai, there has been no corresponding decrease in accidents and fatalities.
Drunk driving does not limit itself to taking the life of the drunk driver but also many innocent lives which they are ferrying in their vehicles or other road users.
Nagpur police has been taking out regular drives to apprehend drunk drivers in an attempt to reduce the accidental deaths due to drunk driving.
In similar drive undertaken on November 15, 2014, as many as 30 drunken drivers were apprehended and cases registered against them.
Under the Bombay Prohibition Act and Sections 110 and 117 of the Bombay Police Act (Darubandi Kayda) 85(1), three persons were apprehended and 3 cases filed against them and a total material worth Rs 2450 was seized.
Around 859 persons were under various sections of Motor Vehicle Act 1988 by the Nagpur Traffic Police. A total fine of Rs 97,000/- was recovered by the offenders by the Traffic Department.
While speaking to Nagpur Today, the In-charge of Traffic Department in Nagpur City, Deputy Commissioner of Police Bharat Tangde said that such drives will be undertaken on regular basis and road-users violating the traffic rules will be penalized. He has appealed to the citizens to carrying all the relevant documents of the vehicle, the driving license on their person while driving any vehicle. On being asked the vehicle users will have to produce the documents failing which the vehicle may get seized.
