Nagpur News:Tension spread like wildfire in the meeting of Management Council of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) held on Friday at Vice Chancellor’s office opposite Maharajbagh in Nagpur to decide upon the fate of 250 colleges banned by the University. As many as 10 students were injured when the police resorted to lathi charge on the agitating members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Some of the senate members walked out of the meeting in protest against the police action. Those injured in the lathi charge included ABVP University Head Ameya Viswaroop, state secretary Swapnil Kathade, Nagpur secretary Gaurava Shevade, joint secretary Abhijeet Badnere and others. Large numbers of girl students were also among the injured. Police also detained 20 students during the clash.
However the ABVP members were in no mood to let go their efforts in vain and decided to escalate their agitation from Saturday. “We are not going to let any senate member enter university premises till our demands are resolved. We will also fast outside Vice Chancellor’s residence to register our protest,” said ABVP’s University Head Ameya Viswaroop.
ABVP members alleged that police tried to thwart them at the behest of senior management which was looking forward to lift ban from these colleges. The members alleged that the most of the senate members included the owners of banned colleges and hence mounting pressure on the management to operate free. They also leveled allegations on Baban Taywade that he has been applying forceful tactics to get the ban lifted putting the future of hundreds of students at stake.

No ear to justified demands
At around 1 pm on Friday, ABVP activists gate crashed the VC’s office and stormed into the meeting hall. They forced their way to the senate members and tried to hand over the copies of their demands pertaining to the blacklisted colleges. The senate members Abhijeet Wanjari, Pro VC Mahendra Nimbalkar and Ashok Gomase accepted the memorandum while the Vice Chancellor Vilas Sapkal who was earlier reluctant to take the memorandum later accepted it.
The memorandum included three-point demand. ABVP wanted these demands to be discussed in the meeting. They demanded that blacklisted colleges should not be given clean chit and an inquiry committee headed by retired justice should be formed to conduct an impartial probe into the matter. They also pressed for the appointment of full time professors in the banned colleges before lifting ban.
Heavy police bandobast
Meanwhile, the heavy police bandobast was made outside the meeting hall to thwart any ruckus. The ABVP members who gathered in large numbers outside the premises raised the protest which was thrashed down by heavy lathi charge. Senate member Mahendra Nimbalse walked out of the meeting opposing the police action.
Meeting meant for lifting ban?
The meeting was reportedly conducted to have the final say over the Academic Council’s decision of lifting the ban from all these blacklisted colleges. Earlier the Academic Council has okayed the move to lift ban from these colleges while Management Council was to give its consent over this move in today’s meeting, alleged one of the ABVP members.
He said such colleges should be closed and if they wanted to operate then they should fulfill the university’s norms before hunting out for admissions.
