Nagpur:
Reeling under demonetisation effect, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has also adopted cashless medium in paying off wages to its corporators. The monthly wages to around 145 corporators have been paid in cheque. Till now, this amount was being paid in cash but the civic body took to cheque payment in the aftermath of demonetisation. The move has brought resentment among the corporators.

It may be mentioned here that NMC is already in bad financial health post withdrawal of octroi and LBT. The civic authorities have been delaying staff salaries, pension and payment to contractors even before demonetisation was announced.

However, NMC has received crores of outstanding taxes recently, remarkably in the form of banned currency notes. The received cash was deposited to banks and later cheques were issued to pay the wages.

Meanwhile, sources informed that NMC’s finance officer Gadge has been on long leave which has stalled the payment of contractors who are miffed over non-payment of their dues since long. Sources said even the corporators’ wages that were paid in cheque are of October month where the due for November was still not paid.
