Nagpur: The crackdown on illegally operating marriage lawns in Nagpur’s Civil Lines area has intensified, with the court adopting a stern and uncompromising stance against violations. What began as scrutiny of a few establishments now threatens to widen into a sweeping enforcement drive that could extend across the entire Vidarbha region.

During a hearing on Thursday, a division bench of Justice Anil Pansare and Justice Nivedita Mehta of the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court imposed stringent conditions on the functioning of marriage lawns and related event venues.

The court made it clear that lawns hosting events must strictly manage parking within their own premises. Lawn owners will now be required to submit a written undertaking confirming that all vehicles attending an event will be parked inside the premises, and not a single vehicle or guest will spill onto public roads.

Civic body, police put on notice

Taking serious note of the growing number of event venues operating without proper permissions, the court directed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and the police administration to maintain strict vigilance over noise pollution and unauthorised marriage functions taking place in the city.

The bench stressed that authorities must not ignore blatant violations and must ensure that illegal events and noise pollution are promptly curbed.

Shocking revelation: No legal permissions

In a startling revelation during the hearing, it emerged that none of the marriage lawns operating in the Civil Lines area possess valid permission to conduct wedding ceremonies or similar events.

Expressing serious concern, the court ordered demolition of unauthorised structures and directed that notices be issued to the lawn owners. The Municipal Commissioner has been instructed to pass appropriate orders and initiate necessary action against the violators.

Court pulls up police for inaction

The bench also sharply criticised the police investigation in a related matter. When police officials claimed that no complaints had been received regarding the events, the court questioned their approach and asked whether they had examined CCTV footage or recorded statements from local residents.

The judges made it clear that law enforcement authorities cannot function like mere “postmen”, passively waiting for complaints. Instead, they must actively investigate and verify violations.

Tough new conditions for event permissions

The court has also laid down strict conditions for granting permission to marriage lawns in the future:

• Complete ban on fireworks and loud celebrations: Bursting firecrackers, beating drums or creating excessive noise will be strictly prohibited both inside and outside the premises.

• Mandatory justification for loudspeakers: Applicants seeking permission to use loudspeakers or sound systems must clearly explain why such equipment is required.

• Strict decibel limits: Organisers must ensure that sound levels remain within the legally permissible decibel limits. Any violation will lead to immediate cancellation of the event permission.

With the judiciary now taking a tough stance, the warning is unmistakable: illegal marriage lawns and noisy celebrations operating outside the law will face strict action, including demolition and cancellation of permissions. The court’s intervention signals a decisive step toward restoring order, public safety and environmental compliance in the city.
