
Nagpur: As part of the ongoing river and drainage cleaning drive in the city, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is intensifying efforts to restore water bodies. To review the progress, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar visited the confluence of the Pili and Nag rivers at Pavangaon on Tuesday, March 24 and conducted an on-site inspection.
During the visit, Dr. Itankar directed officials to immediately begin cleaning operations in the riverbed at the confluence point. He also instructed that the entire river and drainage cleaning campaign be completed by April 30. Senior officials present during the inspection included Chief Engineer Manoj Talewar, Assistant Commissioner Vijay Thool, Executive Engineers Sachin Rakshamwar and Ujwal Dhanvijay, Tehsildar Santosh Khandare, NMRDA official Chimankar, and Deputy Superintendent of Land Records Vinod Merkhade, along with other civic staff.
The Municipal Commissioner further instructed officials from the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA), and NMC to accelerate the pace of cleaning work. He specifically ordered NMRDA officials to complete the cleaning of the area beyond the Pili-Nag river confluence before the April-end deadline.
Additionally, Dr. Vipin Itankar directed both city and rural tehsildars to jointly measure land at the confluence point and ensure that the natural flow of the river is restored by removing obstructions. He also asked NMRDA officials to urgently complete the pending repair work of the road near the bridge leading to Pavangaon.
Inspection of drain wall work
Later, Dr. Itankar inspected the construction of protective walls along a drainage channel in areas under the Dharampeth zone, including Krishnanagar, Azad Nagar, Gawlipura, and Gittikhadan. He emphasized the need to adopt innovative methods.
The Commissioner also instructed the Assistant Commissioner to take action against encroachments on drainage channels. Chief Engineer Manoj Talewar, Corporator Abhijit Jha, Executive Engineer Manoj Gadre, and other officials were present during this visit.
