Nagpur: Nagpur witnessed a landmark political moment on Tuesday as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) ushered in a new era of women-led governance. At a special general body meeting, the civic body formally established what is being described as an unprecedented chapter of “all-women leadership,” extending far beyond the Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s posts to include every major committee.

The decision was announced at the Suresh Bhatt Hall, where it was confirmed that women corporators would now lead the Standing Committee, subject committees, and key civic bodies. This makes Nagpur the first municipal corporation in Maharashtra to hand over all major decision-making positions to women—setting a new benchmark in urban local governance.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party said the move reflects its priority toward women’s empowerment and confidence in women’s administrative capabilities. Following the earlier election of women as Mayor and Deputy Mayor, leadership of crucial committees—including transport, public works, health, education, law, and taxation—has now also been entrusted to women.
