
Nagpur: Nagpur teams had a mixed day in the ongoing Handball Pro League (HPL) in progress at the indoor hall of Divisional Sports Complex, Mankapur on Friday. The inaugural edition of HPL is being held under the aegis of Handball Association of India.
In the women’s section, Nagpur Ajit Nectars eked out a narrow one-point (22-21) win against Ahmedabad Angels in the do-or-die match for both teams. Nagpur led 13-10 at half-time but Ahmedabad fought until the very last minute to narrow the gap of defeat. Suraksha performed brilliantly for Nagpur, scoring the most goals for the team and was named Player of the Match. Kajal scored five goals for Ahmedabad.
In the men’s category, Bhilai Battalions made a remarkable comeback post break to pip Nagpur Tigers 35-34. Nagpur managed to take the lead by one goal at half-time but Bhilai fought back brilliantly in the second session, taking a three-goal lead in the final minutes. Sandeep was the highest scorer for Nagpur with 10 goals, while Rohitas scored seven goals for Bhilai. Goalkeeper Mandeep Lochab stole the spotlight in the third match of the day as Wardha Momentum Warriors beat Mumbai Mercenaries 35-29 in a match which was a virtual knockout for both teams. Lochab was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.
Sumit of Wardha (9) scored the highest goals for Wardha. Chandrapur Think Tank Cheetaz eves recorded their second victory in league with a win over Mumbai Isha’s Marvel 27-23. At half-time, Mumbai led 10-12 and were firmly in control of the match. After the break, Chandrapur made a strong comeback and prevented their opponents from scoring freely. Chandrapur’s Sonika with 9 points was named Player of the Match.
