Nagpur: What began as a late-night liquor gathering among daily-wage labourers ended in a brutal killing, raising disturbing questions about unchecked alcohol abuse, delay in medical response, and the silence that followed the assault. A 40-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his own companions after a minor argument spiralled out of control in Baba Budhaji Nagar under Pachpaoli police limits.

The deceased has been identified as Ramesh alias Vaidya Mukundrao Masram (40), a resident of Taj Nagar in Vaishali Nagar, near an NMC school. Police investigations reveal that Masram was drinking with fellow labourers at the residence of one of the accused late on Sunday night.

According to preliminary findings, an argument broke out between Masram and Shankar Shripad Bhaisare (48), the host of the gathering. What triggered the dispute remains unclear. Investigators are examining whether the quarrel was fuelled purely by intoxication or whether older personal grievances played a role.

Police sources said that during the altercation, Bhaisare allegedly picked up a wooden stick and struck Masram on the head. The blow reportedly caused severe bleeding, following which Masram collapsed. Neighbours claim the situation quickly turned chaotic, yet no immediate medical help was sought from emergency services.

Instead, Masram was later taken to Mayo Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Investigators are now looking into the time gap between the assault and hospital admission to ascertain whether delays contributed to the fatal outcome.

Based on a complaint lodged by the deceased’s brother, Pachpaoli police registered a case under Sections 103 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Three labourers, Shankar Shripad Bhaisare (48), Kapil Ramprasad Nagrare (43), and Jaswantsingh Narendrasingh Adi (75), have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Police officials stated that none of the accused have prior criminal records, strengthening the theory that the killing was the result of a sudden, alcohol-fuelled outburst rather than a premeditated act. However, officers are also probing why other persons present at the gathering failed to intervene or alert authorities in time.

The case has once again drawn attention to the growing pattern of violent incidents linked to illicit or excessive alcohol consumption in residential pockets of the city, particularly among vulnerable labour communities. Investigators are examining whether the liquor consumed was legally procured and if any local vendors violated regulations.

Further investigation is underway, including forensic analysis of the weapon used and the recording of statements from neighbours and other witnesses, as police attempt to reconstruct the final moments leading to Masram’s death.
