Nagpur: Iron ore–rich Gadchiroli is fast emerging as a major hub for steel manufacturing in Vidarbha, with Kolkata-based Super Smelters Ltd becoming the latest industry heavyweight to explore setting up a large-scale steel unit in the region. The company is reportedly planning an investment of nearly Rs 10,000 crore, signalling a fresh boost to industrialisation in eastern Maharashtra.

Sources said Super Smelters is currently evaluating Gadchiroli, Chandrapur and Wardha as potential locations for its proposed steel project, driven by the availability of high-grade iron ore, improving connectivity, and policy support from the State Government.

Confirming the development, Ashish Kale, President of the Association for Industrial Development (AID), said on Monday that company representatives are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Government on the opening day of ‘Advantage Vidarbha 2026 – Khasdar Audyogik Mahotsav’, scheduled to begin on February 6.

Super Smelters Ltd is the flagship company of the Sai Group, which has a strong footprint in the steel and metal manufacturing sector across eastern India. The group operates multiple units in West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar, including facilities at Durgapur and Jamuria in West Bengal, Chaibasa and Koderma in Jharkhand, and Sabalpur in Bihar.

Established in 1995, Super Smelters is a publicly listed company engaged in the production of basic iron and steel, marketing its products under the well-recognised ‘Supershakti’ brand. Over the years, the company has diversified its portfolio to include wire rods, structural steel, billets, pellets, silico-manganese, ferro alloys, ferro chrome, MS pipes, HR coils, and other value-added steel products, catering to both domestic and international markets.

Industry insiders said Vidarbha is witnessing growing interest from several major steel manufacturers, encouraged by the region’s vast mineral resources and emerging industrial ecosystem. Companies such as Jayaswal Neco, Universal Group, Sarda Steel and Tata Steel are also reportedly exploring opportunities to establish new steel plants in districts like Gadchiroli, Chandrapur and Wardha.

With an estimated 178 million tonnes of high-grade iron ore reserves, Gadchiroli has increasingly drawn the attention of large industrial players, positioning the district as a potential cornerstone of Maharashtra’s future steel and mining-driven growth.
