Nagpur: As the city gears up for Sankranti celebrations and kite-flying activities pick up pace, the Nagpur City Police have launched a stringent drive to prevent accidents caused by the use of banned nylon kite strings. Acknowledging the recurring incidents linked to sharp nylon manja every year, the police have stepped up enforcement and awareness measures to avert loss of life and injuries.
Nylon manja has emerged as a silent but deadly threat, particularly for two-wheeler riders, cyclists and pedestrians. Several cases of grievous injuries—and even fatalities—have been reported in the past due to the razor-sharp string. Wildlife, including birds and stray animals, also continues to fall victim to the hazardous material.

The city police have issued a strong appeal to citizens to completely refrain from using nylon manja and to opt only for traditional cotton string, which significantly reduces the risk of accidents. Officials stressed that the use, sale and storage of nylon manja invite strict legal action.
As part of a city-wide awareness campaign, police personnel are engaging directly with citizens through posters, demonstrations and public interactions. Protective safety wires are being fitted on two-wheelers to showcase safe riding practices, while special teams are conducting checks against illegal sale of nylon manja.
The police have also urged parents to guide their children on safe kite-flying practices and discourage the use of dangerous strings. Commissioner of Police Ravindra Singal appealed to citizens to celebrate the festival responsibly, emphasizing that safety must not be compromised in the pursuit of festive enjoyment.
