Nagpur: A brazen act of impersonation, a wedding payment dispute and a sudden hospitalisation have come together to give the Bajaj Nagar police a case that reads like a political thriller.

The police have arrested Varun Mehadia for allegedly threatening a lawn owner by posing as a Personal Assistant (PA) to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, an audacious claim that immediately set alarm bells ringing. The drama deepened when, shortly after his arrest, Mehadia was admitted to a hospital, raising eyebrows and triggering questions over the timing and circumstances.

The case began with Vijay Talewar, a resident of Ramdaspeth and owner of Sai Vatika Lawn in Bajaj Nagar. The lawn had been booked for a wedding on December 11 by Parshuram Dighore, who introduced himself as the PA of Food and Drug Administration Minister Narhari Zirwal. However, once the celebrations ended, a dispute erupted over pending payment for the venue.

On December 19, Talewar received a phone call that escalated the matter dramatically. The caller, later identified as Varun Mehadia, allegedly introduced himself as a PA from the Chief Minister’s Office, claiming to handle official work at Hyderabad House in Nagpur. Speaking with authority, Mehadia allegedly warned Talewar not to demand the outstanding amount from Dighore.

Sensing something amiss, Talewar chose caution over fear. He directly contacted the Chief Minister’s Office to verify the caller’s credentials. The response was swift and clear, no person named Varun Mehadia was associated with the CM’s office.

Armed with this confirmation, Talewar approached Bajaj Nagar police, who registered a case on December 22 and launched an investigation. Sources said Mehadia was summoned for questioning, but his explanations failed to satisfy investigators. He was subsequently taken into custody on Wednesday.

In a twist that added another layer to the unfolding drama, Mehadia was sent for a routine medical examination after his arrest. During the check-up, he reportedly complained of health problems and was admitted to a hospital on doctors’ advice.

Police officials said that Mehadia remains under watch, with police personnel deployed at the hospital, and will be taken back into custody once discharged. “The investigation is continuing, and all aspects of the impersonation and threats are being probed,” a senior officer said.

As the probe progresses, the case has sparked fresh debate over the misuse of political identities to intimidate citizens, and whether the hospital admission is merely a medical necessity or another twist in a carefully staged act.
