Nagpur: In a major enforcement drive on New Year’s Eve, the Nagpur City Traffic Police launched an intensive crackdown against drunken driving and other traffic violations to ensure public safety during celebrations. Special teams were deployed across major arterial roads, nightlife hubs and residential areas from 9 pm onwards on December 31.
Multiple checkpoints were set up where breathalyser tests were conducted, and enforcement teams frequently changed locations to prevent motorists from evading checks. Apart from drunk driving, police also took action against overspeeding, wrong-side driving, triple riding, riding without helmets and other dangerous violations.
Simultaneously, Nagpur Police strengthened law-and-order arrangements across the city. CCTV surveillance, coordination between police stations and district control rooms, and additional deployment in sensitive and high-footfall areas helped prevent untoward incidents during the celebrations.
According to senior police officials, the drive was not merely punitive but aimed at sending a strong deterrent message against drunk driving, one of the leading causes of fatal road accidents in the city.
