Nagpur: Nagpur welcomed the New Year with a sharp nip in the air, as the city recorded a chilly 8.5 degrees Celsius on New Year’s Eve, marking a further tightening of winter’s grip.
The minimum temperature dipped 3.6 degrees below normal on Wednesday, signalling mild cold conditions across the city, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Despite the cold night, daytime conditions remained largely pleasant. The city logged a maximum temperature of 28.6 degrees Celsius, slightly higher by 0.4 degrees compared to the previous day and close to the seasonal average. Morning humidity hovered around 65 per cent at 8.30 am,
lending a comfortable feel to early hours. No rainfall was reported in the past 24 hours, keeping weather conditions dry across Nagpur and the Vidarbha region.
Morning visibility ranged between 2 and 4 kilometres, with light haze observed in some areas. Meteorological officials said clear skies and dry weather are likely to persist over the next few days, with cool nights and agreeable daytime temperatures. However, the chill is expected to intensify, with the IMD forecasting a further drop of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures from January 2 onwards.
Across Vidarbha, Gondia emerged as the coldest location, recording a minimum temperature of 8.2 degrees Celsius. Amravati followed closely at 8.7 degrees, while Wardha registered 9.6 degrees, all remaining in single digits. Bhandara,
Brahmapuri, Gadchiroli, Washim and Yavatmal also saw minimum temperatures below 11 degrees Celsius. In contrast, Buldhana reported the highest minimum temperature in the region at 14 degrees Celsius.
Even as nights turned colder, daytime temperatures across most Vidarbha districts stayed below normal, underscoring the steady advance of winter conditions in the region.
