Nagpur: Stung by scathing remarks from the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) launched an aggressive crackdown and removed 2,803 illegal banners and hoardings within 24 hours between Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

The clean-up came a day after local media exposed the unchecked proliferation of political banners across the city during the ongoing Winter Session of the State Legislature.

On Tuesday, a division bench of Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Rajnish Vyas slammed NMC officials for making misleading claims about hoarding removal, warning that contempt proceedings would follow if the city was not cleared of illegal structures by Wednesday. The court had fixed a review hearing for Wednesday afternoon, putting additional pressure on the civic body.

Under judicial fire, NMC swung into action. The Mangalwari zone topped the list with 1,096 hoardings removed, followed by Laxmi Nagar (533), Dhantoli (405), and Nehru Nagar (212), among others. The Corporation collected a meagre Rs 7,000 in fines, despite identifying 2,611 individuals and organisations responsible for erecting the unauthorized displays. It also filed 686 police complaints against violators.

The rapid clean-up, triggered only after the court’s stern intervention, has once again highlighted the civic body’s lax enforcement and reactive approach, raising concerns about whether the city will remain hoarding-free once the spotlight fades.
