Nagpur: A young woman doctor, identified as Dr. Ritu Deshmukh, has been arrested for allegedly murdering her boyfriend, Balaji Kalyane (24), in Nagpur’s Nandanvan Colony after a prolonged dispute over marriage, police said on Friday.
According to investigators, Deshmukh allegedly stabbed Kalyane in the chest while he was asleep late Thursday night. Police stated that she later attempted to mislead them by inflicting injuries on herself and claiming that Kalyane had first attacked her before trying to end his own life. She reportedly tried to project the incident as a failed murder suicide attempt.
However, police officials said that CCTV footage, technical analysis, and medical reports contradicted her account. Forensic inconsistencies led the investigation team to conclude that the killing was premeditated, resulting in Deshmukh’s immediate arrest.
Preliminary findings suggest the couple had been arguing for several months over marriage. Kalyane, a native of Mudkhed in Nanded district, had reportedly proposed to Deshmukh multiple times, but she refused, leading to repeated confrontations. The disagreement allegedly escalated on Thursday night, culminating in the fatal assault.
Residents of Nandanvan Colony expressed shock and anger, noting the irony that a medical professional a person trained to save lives was involved in such a crime. Several locals also condemned her alleged attempt to fabricate evidence to mislead the investigation.
Police said the probe is still underway. Teams are examining the couple’s relationship history, the exact motive, and whether any external influence or additional person played a role in the planning of the murder.
