Nagpur: A late-night ride to pick up friends turned tragic for a 22-year-old IIM-Nagpur student, whose motorcycle was fatally struck by an unidentified vehicle on the MIHAN Bridge on Saturday. Police say the impact was so severe that the rider was thrown off the bike, leaving him in a pool of blood as the offending vehicle sped away.
The victim, Anuj Trilochan Pathak, hailed from Nainital district in Uttarakhand and was a second-year MBA student at IIM-Nagpur. Belonging to a well-educated family, Anuj’s brother is an IIT engineer, and his sister lives in Mumbai.
Police said Anuj and four friends had gone for dinner at Jassi Da Dhaba on Saturday night, where the group also consumed alcohol. After dinner, Anuj used his Royal Enfield Bullet (MH03/DE-1082) to drop two friends back to the IIM campus. Around 9.30 pm, he left the campus again to return to the dhaba to collect the remaining two friends. But he never arrived.
Repeated calls from the waiting friends went unanswered. The two friends already at the campus also failed to reach Anuj over the phone. Growing anxious, the two youths at the dhaba began walking toward the IIM campus via the MIHAN Bridge to trace him.
Midway across the bridge, the two spotted a horrifying scene, Anuj lying motionless in a pool of blood, with his Bullet parked nearby, heavily damaged at the front. The nature of the damage suggested a violent crash.
They immediately alerted the police. A team from Sonegaon Police Station reached the spot and examined the site. Preliminary findings indicate that Anuj’s motorcycle was hit head-on by a fast-approaching vehicle coming from the opposite direction, which then fled, making it a likely hit-and-run case.
A case has been registered, and police have launched a detailed investigation. CCTV footage from adjoining roads, establishments, and junctions leading to the MIHAN Bridge is being scrutinized to trace the culprit.
