Engagement ceremony turns bloody: Youth shot, stabbed near Nagpur; 7 arrested

Nagpur: A violent clash triggered by an old rivalry turned a Sunday afternoon engagement ceremony into a scene of chaos and bloodshed in Shankarpat village under Kalmeshwar Police Station limits near Nagpur. A youth was shot at with a country-made pistol and then brutally attacked with knives, leaving him critically injured. Two others who tried to intervene were also grievously hurt. The sudden violence sent shockwaves through the entire area. Acting swiftly, police arrested all seven accused within hours.

According to police, Balya Hiramani Gujar, a resident of Birsa Nagar, Kuhi Phata (Umred), had come to Shankarpat to attend an acquaintance’s engagement ceremony. At the venue, the accused Deva alias Parameshwar Eknath was present along with his relatives.

As soon as Deva spotted Balya, he allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol and opened fire. After the firing, Deva along with accused Akash, Tapan, Moreswar, and others launched a knife attack, stabbing Balya repeatedly.

When Sunil Gurjar and Mukesh Mahapure tried to intervene, they too were assaulted and sustained serious injuries.

On receiving information, Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police Harsh Poddar, Additional SP Anil Mhaske, Additional DySP Parag Pote, and Kalmeshwar Police Station in-charge Manoj Kalbande reached the spot with teams.

A spot panchnama was conducted, and the injured were immediately shifted to hospital in an ambulance arranged by social worker Hitesh Bansod. Critically injured Balya Gujar is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Nagpur.

Old enmity behind the attack

Investigations revealed that Balya and accused Deva are relatives. A few years ago, Balya had allegedly abducted Deva due to a prior dispute. Since then, the two had been embroiled in a deep-seated enmity, which culminated in Sunday’s violent retaliation.

Showing prompt action, Kalmeshwar police apprehended all seven accused within a few hours. Those arrested include: Deva alias Parameshwar Eknath, Tapan Pisararam Eknath, Akash Pisararam Eknath, Moreswar Pisararam Eknath, Sawan Kashiram Eknath, Kashiram Baburao Eknath, and Dinesh Saneshwar, all residents of Ward No. 1, Selu, Kalmeshwar.

Police are interrogating the accused and verifying the weapons seized from the crime scene.
