Nagpur cops crack inter-state gold theft ring run by jewellery store employees

Nagpur: Tehsil Police in Nagpur have arrested three members of an inter-state gang involved in stealing gold from jewellery shops where they worked as employees. The breakthrough came after a gold theft reported from Suryawanshi Refinery, Sudam Galli, New Itwari Road.

According to police, complainant Sadashiv Bhimrao Suryawanshi (55), a resident of Labhantanda, Juni Shukrawari, Nagpur, owns a gold ornaments manufacturing shop. On April 4, 2025, around 3:15 pm, Suryawanshi was working inside the shop while his son had stepped out for lunch. During this brief period, an employee identified as Sachin Salukhe (30), a native of Vita, Sangli, allegedly stole a gold piece weighing 200 grams, valued at approximately Rs 5.5 lakh, from a steel bowl kept inside the shop counter and fled.

After checking the CCTV footage, the complainant filed a report at Tehsil Police Station. Based on the complaint, a case was registered against the accused under Sections 306, 317(2), and 3(5) of the BNS.

During the investigation, Tehsil Police conducted technical analysis and discovered that the accused had fled to Ichalkaranji in Kolhapur district. A special team was sent there, and the accused, identified as Sachin Salukhe alias Vaibhav Bhauso Malgave (30), resident of Kabnur, Ichalkaranji, Kolhapur, was apprehended after a trap was laid. Police recovered 55 grams of stolen gold from his possession.

Gang of store employees exposed

During interrogation, Salukhe revealed that he had disposed of the stolen gold with the help of accomplices: Jagnnath Prakash Javir (46), resident of Khambale, Vita, Sangli, Prashant Nanasa Mulik (25), resident of New Vikas Nagar, Khed, Satara and a anted accused Chetan Prakash Javir, resident of Khambale, Vita, Sangli.

Acting on this information, police arrested accused Jagannath Javir and Prashant Mulik. From Mulik’s possession, officers seized 50.3 grams of gold dust.

Modus operandi

Police revealed that the accused are part of a well-organised gang operating across Maharashtra and neighbouring states. They take up temporary jobs at jewellery shops, gain trust, and steal gold at opportune moments before fleeing.

In total, police have recovered 105.3 grams of gold, including gold pieces and gold dust, worth around Rs 11.5 lakh. Police said efforts are underway to trace the absconding fourth accused, and further investigation is in progress.
