Nagpur: A labourer living at a construction site in Jaywant Nagar under Ajni Police Station limits was allegedly strangled to death by his co-worker, who later attempted to burn the body to destroy evidence, police said on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Dhansingh Daramsingh Uike (30), a native of Chhatarpur Ghugri in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. He and the accused, Ganesh Dhurve (30), a resident of Aurai, Katangi in Mandla district (MP), were both employed at a construction site and shared a room at Plot No. 47, Central Railway Colony, Jaywant Nagar.
Between 11:15 pm on November 19 and 8:30 am on November 20, 2025, Dhansingh was found in a suspiciously burnt condition at the construction site. He was rushed to Mayo Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Initially, a case of accidental death was registered.
However, during the post-mortem examination, doctors confirmed that Dhansingh Uike had died due to strangulation, not burns, raising serious suspicion of foul play.
CCTV footage points to accused
During investigation, police reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which reportedly showed accused Ganesh Dhurve turning off the room lights late at night and running away in a suspicious manner shortly after.
Police believe that Dhurve had an argument with Uike over some issue, during which he allegedly strangled him to death. To cover up the murder, he is suspected to have set the body on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Based on a complaint filed by Woman PSI Manisha Zanjurne, PI Siddhant Maske registered an FIR at Ajni Police Station under: Section 103(1) (Murder), Section 238 (Causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The accused is currently absconding, and police have launched a search along with further investigation.
