Nagpur: Crime Branch busts inter-city vehicle theft racket, 13 two-wheelers recovered

Nagpur: In a major breakthrough, the Crime Branch’s Anti-Vehicle Theft Squad of Nagpur City Police has arrested one accused and recovered 13 stolen two-wheelers worth Rs 6.5 lakh, solving multiple theft cases registered across various police station limits in the city.

According to police, on October 7, 2025, complainant Ramesh Arjun Donarkar (56), a resident of Shivankar Nagar, Kharbi Road, Nandanvan, had parked his Honda Activa (MH-49/AN-5587) worth Rs 20,000 in front of Dhansons Lawn, Wardhaman Nagar under Lakadganj Police Station limits. When he returned later that night between 9:30 pm and 10:30 pm, the vehicle was missing. Based on his complaint, Lakadganj Police registered a case under Section 379 of the IPC against unidentified accused.

While investigating parallel cases of vehicle theft, the Crime Branch’s Anti-Vehicle Theft Squad was conducting checks at lodges and establishments on November 12, 2025, when they spotted a man with the stolen Activa near an OYO Hotel in Dighori under Wathoda Police Station limits. The suspect was identified as Rishabh Shyam Asopa (35), resident of Flat No. 110, Shanti Palace, Lakadganj, Nagpur.

Upon interrogation, Asopa confessed to stealing the vehicle along with his accomplices, Ritik Shyamsundar Asopa and a juvenile in conflict with law. During further questioning, the accused admitted to committing 12 additional vehicle thefts across multiple police station jurisdictions, including two each under Lakadganj, Tehsil, and Dhantoli, and one each under Sitabuldi, Kalamna, Bajaj Nagar, Nandanvan, Imamwada, and Jaripatka.

Following the recovery, the police seized 13 two-wheelers in total, including 12 motorcycles and one Honda Activa, valued at approximately Rs 6.5 lakh. The arrested accused and the recovered vehicles were handed over to the Lakadganj Police for further investigation. Efforts are underway to trace the absconding co-accused and the juvenile involved.

This successful operation was carried out under the supervision of Vasant Pardeshi (Additional Commissioner of Police – Crime), Rahil Maknikar (Deputy Commissioner of Police – Detection), and Abhijit Patil (Assistant Commissioner of Police – Crime Branch). The operation was led by Senior Police Inspector Sudhir Borkute, Assistant Police Inspector Vivek Zingre, and the dedicated team of Deepak Rithe, Vilas Kokate, Shambhusingh Kirar, Sachin Badhiye, Pankaj Hedau, Kishor Somkunwar, Ajay Shukla, Rahul Kusrame, Vivek Kawadkar, and Abhay Dhone.

The operation marks a significant strike against the rising incidents of two-wheeler thefts in the city and showcases the vigilance and efficiency of Nagpur Police in tracking down repeat offenders.
