Mumbai: As voting concludes in the Bihar Assembly elections, Maharashtra is gearing up for its upcoming local body polls. Against this backdrop, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has handed a major responsibility to senior leader and former state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, appointing him as the party’s in-charge for the upcoming local self-government elections.
The BJP’s decision has stirred considerable discussion in political circles. Many see it as a strategic move that leverages Bawankule’s extensive organizational experience and disciplined working style—qualities that are expected to benefit the party in the coming electoral battle.
Confirming the news himself, Bawankule said, “Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and State President Ravindra Chavan have entrusted me with the responsibility of overseeing the upcoming local body elections. I will coordinate closely with the organization and the entire Mahayuti (Grand Alliance) team to ensure success.”
He further added, “We will work collectively for the municipal corporations, municipal councils, zilla parishads, and nagar panchayats. I am confident that with the strength of the Mahayuti, we will achieve victory in all these elections.”
Bawankule revealed that the decision was formally made during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Fadnavis. Expressing optimism, he said, “I am confident that the Mahayuti will win two-thirds of the seats across Maharashtra.”
The BJP’s move to entrust Bawankule with this high-stakes role is being seen as a strategic and timely step, given the crucial importance of local elections in shaping the political landscape ahead of the 2029 state polls.
