Nagpur:  A tragic road accident on Besa–Pipla Road left one elderly man dead and another seriously injured after a woman driving a car allegedly rammed into their two-wheeler and dragged one of them for several feet under her vehicle.

The deceased has been identified as Rangrao Patil, a resident of Pyramid City-6 on Pipla Road. The injured, Sham Nagdev, who lives in the same locality, is currently undergoing treatment.

According to police, the incident occurred around 7:30 pm on Wednesday. Both men were on a two-wheeler (MH 31 EL 8650) heading towards Besa Chowk to have tea when a car (MH 49 BW 2742) driven by Sunaina Okar, a local school teacher, allegedly hit them in front of Laxmi Mart Super Bazaar on Pipla Road.

The impact threw both men off the vehicle. Sham fell to one side of the road, while Rangrao came under the car. Witnesses said the driver lost control, dragging Rangrao several feet before stopping. Locals rushed to help and took both victims to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where doctors declared Rangrao dead on arrival.

Preliminary police investigation revealed that Sunaina Okar, the driver, was alone in the car at the time. A case has been registered against her under relevant sections of the IPC and Motor Vehicles Act.

Locals Blame Poor Road Condition

Residents of the area alleged that ongoing road construction and uneven potholes along the stretch have made driving hazardous. They also claimed that several unauthorized speed breakers have been built by locals for convenience, worsening the situation.

“Due to a sudden bump, the two-wheeler may have lost balance. The car behind couldn’t stop in time,” said one eyewitness.

There are no functioning streetlights, no warning boards, and no reflective safety signs near the construction site, residents said — pointing out that accidents have become a daily occurrence on that stretch.

Police from Hudkeshwar Police Station reached the spot soon after receiving the alert. As the accident occurred late in the evening, the accused was not immediately detained. She was later booked and further action is being taken.

This accident has once again raised questions about poor traffic management and unsafe road conditions in developing zones around South Nagpur, where ongoing construction and lack of lighting continue to claim lives.
