In the first incident, two youngsters lost their lives at Bhagimahari Lake in Parseoni tehsil. According to police, eight friends from Nagpur had gone to the lake for a picnic. They arrived around 11 am, and at about 3 pm, while taking selfies near the water, two of them accidentally slipped into the deep section of the lake.

Neither of the two victims knew how to swim and drowned before help could reach. The deceased have been identified as Avinash Anand (20), a native of Bihar studying at Priyadarshini College of Engineering, Nagpur, and Sankalp Sunil Malve (19), a Class 12 student of St. Paul College, Nagpur, and resident of Chandrapur.

The six other boys present were identified as Avdet Maroti Gaurkar (17), Ojas Prakash Kathoke (16), Samyak Anil Undirwade (17), Om Manohar Chaure (17), Prem Kamlakar Korde (20), and Yathang Sagar Chaure (17) — all residents of different parts of Nagpur, Chandrapur, and Wardha districts.

Local residents said the Bhagimahari Lake has witnessed several drowning incidents in the past, yet no safety measures such as barricades, warning signs, or lifeguards have been installed. “Tourists come here to enjoy and click pictures, ignoring the dangers. Unfortunately, such outings often end in tragedy,” said one local villager.

Upon receiving the information, PI Rajesh Kumar Thorat, PSI Ramrao Pawar, Head Constable Dhurve, and other police personnel from Parseoni reached the spot. With assistance from Aapda Mitra volunteers, a search operation was launched. One body was recovered by evening, while the search for the second continued late into the night. Further investigation is underway.

Uncle-niece duo drown during swimming practice in Ramtek

In another incident earlier the same morning, a 13-year-old girl and her uncle drowned during swimming practice in Jaipaleshwar Lake, under Dongri Gram Panchayat in Ramtek.

The deceased were identified as Harshita Vinod Makde (13), a resident of Naya Basti, Bhojpur, originally from Shivaji Ward, Ramtek, and her maternal uncle Ajay Wamanrao Lohbare (32), a resident of Khat village.

According to reports, Ajay had visited Ramtek to attend the Tripuri Purnima festivities. Around 8 am on Wednesday, Harshita, Ajay, and her father Vinod went to the lake for swimming practice. Harshita, who had been learning to swim for a few months using a rubber tube, lost grip of the tube and began to drown.

Seeing her in distress, Ajay jumped into the water to save her. In panic, Harshita clutched tightly onto her uncle, causing both to sink. The tragic scene unfolded before the eyes of her helpless father.

Police later visited the spot and conducted a panchanama. Further investigations in both incidents are in progress.
