Nagpur: Even as the State Election Commission (SEC) on Tuesday enforced the model code of conduct for notified Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) remains unfazed, and outside its scope. Backed by a fresh Rs 315-crore grant from the State Government, the civic body has accelerated a string of development projects across the city.
The funds, sanctioned through two government resolutions dated October 29, arrived just as the civic poll buzz grows louder. Major tenders for concrete roads, resurfacing, drainage expansion, and beautification have already been floated.
Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari made it clear that the ongoing works would continue unhindered. “There will be no halt to projects. NMC will carry on with scheduled works to improve civic infrastructure,” Chaudhari asserted, adding that tenders cover roads, water supply, sewerage, street lighting, and public amenities.
Officials clarified that while the model code does not restrict works within NMC’s jurisdiction, the civic body cannot issue orders that might influence elections in adjoining Municipal Councils or Nagar Panchayats.
“Development in NMC limits will continue, but any directive impacting other local bodies will not be issued,” explained Deputy Commissioner (Election) Milind Meshram.
Meanwhile, the election groundwork inside NMC is progressing steadily. Ward-wise voter lists will be finalized by November 6, followed by the ward reservation draw on November 11, to be endorsed by the SEC on December 2. The SEC has directed that civic polls in Nagpur be completed by January 31, though political observers suggest polling might be deferred until after the winter session — or even to April, considering board exams in February-March.
With political strategies unfolding, the civic machinery is racing ahead with on-ground works. The administration has prioritized water supply and drainage upgrades in East and North Nagpur, and junction redesign and road improvement in West Nagpur.
Among the notable works in progress are:
• Construction of concrete and tar roads, pipeline replacement, and stormwater network expansion
• Smart lighting, waste management, and sanitation facilities
• Playground beautification in Hudkeshwar and Narsala
• Boundary walls and walking tracks in East Nagpur
• Nullah protection wall at Imamwada, Renuka Mata temple precinct development, and a community hall for sanitation workers in Pachpaoli
• E-libraries across localities and upgrades at Nagpur Vyayam Shala, Mahal
With the city gearing up for polls and development momentum at its peak, NMC’s twin track of governance and groundwork is set to define Nagpur’s pre-election narrative.
