Beggar beaten to death at Gangabai Ghat Shelter in Nagpur, accused held

Nagpur: In a grim incident at a temporary shelter near Gangabai Ghat, Kotwali police have arrested a 37-year-old beggar for allegedly murdering another homeless man following a heated argument.

The deceased has been identified as Suraj Shankar Meshram (35), a resident of Corporation Colony, Gangabai Ghat, who earned his living by cleaning at the shelter and begging in the vicinity. The accused, Devaraj Bhajanlal Yadav (37), a native of Harai village in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, had also been residing at the same shelter.

According to police, the incident occurred on October 25, 2025, between 8.30 pm and 9.00 pm, when an argument erupted between the two. In a fit of rage, Devaraj allegedly struck Meshram on the head with an iron rod attached to a broom, leaving him critically injured.

Meshram was immediately shifted to Mayo Hospital, where he battled for life for five days before succumbing to his injuries on October 30. Initially, the matter was treated as an accidental death, but post-mortem findings and further inquiry confirmed it to be a case of homicide.

Based on the investigation, PSI Mane of Kotwali Police registered an offence under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and arrested the accused. Further investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the fatal attack.
