Nagpur: The Unaided Schools Welfare Association has urged the government to grant CBSE schools the right to decide their own holiday schedules. The association has formally requested that Christmas holidays be approved from December 24 to January 1. A letter in this regard has been sent to State Minister of School Education Pankaj Bhoyar.

On Monday, a meeting was held with the Secondary Education Officer and the Chief Executive Officer to discuss the issue of holiday planning. Association President Principal Neeru Kapai, Vice President Rajabhau Taksale, and Secretary Dr. John Kurumathin, among others, attended the meeting. The association represents 250 CBSE-affiliated schools across the region.

Board Exams and Academic Calendar Concerns
CBSE has already released the timetable for the 2026 board exams, scheduled to begin on February 17, 2026. Schools argue that since the annual academic framework and vacation schedule are decided at the beginning of the session, they should have the flexibility to adjust holidays according to academic needs.

According to the association, CBSE students already receive a 21-day preparatory period before exams. Extending holidays unnecessarily, they said, affects academic progress. Therefore, CBSE schools should be allowed to independently plan their calendars, balancing holidays and coursework without disrupting learning schedules.

Christmas Break Demand After Diwali Directive
Recently, all boards—including CBSE—were instructed to follow a uniform Diwali break from October 18 to November 1, as per a new government resolution (GR). Following this directive, the standard Christmas holidays were fixed from December 22 to 25. However, CBSE schools are now seeking an extension of this period till January 1, citing alignment with national and international CBSE schedules.

The delegation at the meeting also included Praveen Tiwari, Dr. Inderjeet Singh Tuli, Dr. Pranita Phuke, Alex, Anandraj Theresappa, Anuj Badjate, Roshan Dhore, Dr. Nishit Vijayan, and Wilson Mathew.
