Nagpur Fire Incidents Expose Builders’ Negligence and Poor Fire Safety Measures

Nagpur: A spate of fire incidents across Nagpur in recent weeks has once again exposed serious lapses in fire safety and the negligence of builders. From godowns and restaurants to multi-storey complexes, repeated outbreaks have kept the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Fire and Emergency Department on high alert, raising questions about the city’s readiness to handle such emergencies.

In the latest incident, a dairy shop near the TV Tower in Seminary Hills was gutted by fire early Monday morning. The blaze destroyed three refrigerators, furniture, cash worth ₹2.5 lakh, and other materials, causing total losses estimated at around ₹20 lakh. Firefighters from the Civil Lines Fire Station responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at around 5 am and managed to douse the flames within an hour. The cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical short circuit.

Just a day earlier, two major fires had been reported — one at a popular restaurant in Dharampeth and another at a scrap factory on Old Kamptee Road. Combined property losses were estimated at ₹1.30 crore, though prompt action by firefighters prevented additional damage worth nearly ₹1 crore. Investigations are underway to determine if poor maintenance and safety violations played a role.

Earlier this month, Diwali night brought a series of fire tragedies, with 18 incidents recorded across the city — half of them caused by firecrackers. The most severe occurred at the Reliance SMART Superstore at Aath Rasta Square, where flames reached the ninth floor, destroying stocks of consumer goods, electrical fittings, and furniture. Fortunately, timely evacuation prevented any casualties.

The festive period also saw 31 people, including two toddlers, suffer burn injuries due to mishandled firecrackers. Most were admitted to Mayo Hospital and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) with facial and hand burns.

Amid the surge in fire accidents, NMC officials have emphasized the urgent need for strict enforcement of fire safety norms. The civic body has also warned of stringent action against property owners and developers operating without valid fire no-objection certificates (NOCs) or essential safety systems like alarms, extinguishers, and hydrants.
