Nagpur: A controversy has erupted over a dance performance during the ‘Diwali Milan’ celebration at the office of the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) in Nagpur. The event, meant to be a festive get-together, has sparked political uproar after a video of the alleged dance went viral on social media.

Citing damage to the party’s image, NCP State General Secretary and MLA Shivajirao Garje issued a show-cause notice to Nagpur District President Anil Ahirkar, seeking clarification on the incident.

In response, women office-bearers of the party held a press conference on Tuesday, accusing sections of the media of distorting facts and sensationalizing the video.

NCP Nagpur City Women’s Wing President Sunita Yerne alleged that the video was repeatedly aired with misleading titles such as “Lavani Dance in NCP Office” and “Mala Jau Dya Na Ghari”, portraying the event in poor light. “We were celebrating Diwali as one family at our party office. Everyone was showcasing their talents, and one of our women members—who is actually a professional Lavani dancer—performed her art,” Yerne explained.

She further claimed that the media ignored the dignity of the woman performer and sensationalized the clip for political motives. “It appears that the media was paid to malign our party ahead of the upcoming elections. The way the clip was presented was completely misleading,” she said.

The incident has sparked a debate within the NCP ranks, with senior leaders calling for restraint while the party’s local unit stands firm on its claim of media misrepresentation.
