NMC begins complex exercise to finalize prabhag-wise voters’ lists ahead of civic polls

Deadline set for November 2; final list to be published on November 6

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated the meticulous and time-bound process of preparing prabhag-wise voters’ lists for all 38 prabhags ahead of the upcoming general municipal elections. With several Assembly constituencies overlapping multiple civic zones, the exercise has become one of the most complex pre-election tasks for the civic body.

Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari on Saturday conducted a training session at the NMC headquarters for officials from all ten zones, setting November 2 as the deadline for submission of the prabhag-wise voters’ lists. Zone-wise teams have already been constituted and will begin intensive field verification from Monday. The teams will cross-check voter data provided by the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure every voter is accurately placed within the correct prabhag boundary.

Each verification team comprises five members, including an engineer, a tax inspector familiar with local addresses, and a health inspector. These teams will carry out house-to-house verification of voter data, irrespective of Assembly constituency boundaries. The goal is to align every voter within NMC limits to the correct prabhag, based on the newly finalised demarcations approved by the SEC.

Officials revealed that despite the extensive verification process, the voters’ lists and ward boundaries will largely remain unchanged from the 2017 municipal elections. However, since over one lakh new voters have been added since the last civic polls, the field teams have been instructed to ensure that entries of deceased, relocated, or duplicate voters are removed from the final rolls.

The mapping exercise has been particularly challenging due to overlapping Assembly constituencies and civic zones.

• The South Nagpur Assembly constituency includes major portions of Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli, and Nehru Nagar zones.

• The South-West constituency covers about 70% of Laxmi Nagar Zone, along with smaller portions of Ashi Nagar, Satranjipura, and Lakadganj zones.

• Central Nagpur spans large parts of Gandhibagh Zone and sections of Satranjipura, Dhantoli, and Hanuman Nagar zones.

• The East constituency covers nearly 80% of Lakadganj Zone and small pockets of Satranjipura, Nehru Nagar, and Gandhibagh.

• The West Nagpur constituency primarily includes Dharampeth and Mangalwari zones, while the North constituency encompasses Ashi Nagar Zone and small parts of Mangalwari and Satranjipura.

• Additionally, Hudkeshwar and Narsala localities under Kamptee Assembly constituency fall within Hanuman Nagar Zone.

A senior civic official said, “Reconciling the assembly-wise lists with prabhag boundaries across different zones is one of the most complicated parts of this process. Even minor discrepancies can impact the accuracy of the final electoral rolls.”

SEC schedule and election timeline

According to the SEC’s 2025 election schedule, the draft voters’ list for the civic polls, based on the Assembly constituency voters’ list as of July 1, 2025, will be published on November 6, 2025, followed by a period for objections and suggestions.

• The list of polling station locations will be released on December 4, 2025, and

• The polling station-wise voters’ list will be published on December 10, 2025.

For the upcoming civic elections, prabhag numbers 1 to 37 will each elect four corporators, while prabhag number 38 will have three corporators. After completing verification and compilation, NMC will publish the final prabhag-wise voters’ lists as per SEC timelines.

Commissioner’s instructions

During Saturday’s training session, Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari directed all zonal officers to ensure strict adherence to SEC deadlines. He emphasized coordination, planning, and periodic review meetings to track progress.

“The preparation of accurate and prabhag-wise voters’ lists is the foundation of fair civic elections. Every officer must ensure error-free compilation within the prescribed timeframe,” Chaudhari said.

With the deadline approaching, all eyes are now on the NMC’s zone-wise teams as they begin the crucial groundwork to set the stage for Nagpur’s much-awaited civic elections.
