Nagpur: A 32-year-old man was found dead under unexplained circumstances near the surgical complex of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), popularly known as Mayo Hospital, early Monday. The body of the deceased, identified as Krishna Kumar Ram of Sadbhavana Colony, Patansawangi, in Nagpur district, was discovered drenched near a waterlogged internal road.
Police have ruled out foul play, saying there were no external injuries and the preliminary post-mortem did not cite drowning as the cause of death. The viscera has been preserved for chemical analysis to determine the exact cause.
Krishna Kumar had visited the hospital on Sunday night to meet his wife and newborn daughter. Relatives claim he accidentally fell into a water-filled pit due to poor lighting, absence of barricades, and lack of warning signs. A video shared by them shows the waterlogged turning inside the hospital premises, an area reportedly submerged for days despite no recent rainfall.
Major civil works are currently underway at the hospital, with heavy vehicle movement leaving internal roads damaged. The spot where Kumar was found is close to the UG and PG hostels. Students had recently complained about accidents due to poor road conditions.
Relatives have demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation from the government, accusing the hospital and Public Works Department (PWD) of negligence. They allege the Dean’s letter to PWD about road repairs, sent a day after the incident, made no mention of the death.
PWD officials, however, denied the allegations, stating there was no deep waterlogging or pit at the site and that road repairs were ongoing in patches. They added that contractors had been instructed to install barricades and diversion boards, and an inquiry would be conducted.
Tehsil police have registered a case of accidental death and are continuing their investigation.
