Nagpur: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court demanding a reduction in the cost of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) for vehicles in Maharashtra. These plates have been made mandatory for all vehicles in the state.
The matter was heard on Monday by Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Vrushali Joshi, who cautioned that improper presentation of the case could lead to losses for both parties and the public. The petitioner’s lawyer was instructed to present all facts and issues clearly.
Petitioner Highlights Price Disparity
Petitioner Sudarshan Bagde pointed out that HSRP plates are priced at ₹155 in Goa and ₹200 in Punjab, but cost ₹530 (including GST) for two-wheelers and ₹1,000 for four-wheelers in Maharashtra. He argued that citizens are already burdened by fines and strict enforcement measures, and the rates should be reduced.
The PIL also contends that HSRP plates do not fully contain all the vehicle-related details as claimed.
Court Proceedings
The court had earlier issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra on the matter. Senior Advocate Sunil Manohar appeared for the State Government, while Advocate Santosh Chavan represented the petitioner.
The case is expected to impact millions of vehicle owners in Maharashtra, particularly in Nagpur and other urban centers, if the court rules in favor of reducing HSRP rates.
