Nagpur/Gondia: A religious ritual turned tragic on Sunday afternoon when three women from Nagpur drowned in the Bagh River near Korni Ghat in Gondia district. The women were part of a group that had travelled to Pagartola village to perform Pind Daan, a Hindu ritual for deceased ancestors.

The deceased have been identified as Meenakshi Santosh Baghel (39), Neetu Shatrudhan Baghel (35), and Mirabai Ishulal Turkar (50), all residents of Nagpur.

According to the Rawanwadi Police, the Turkar family had recently lost a member, Mukesh Turkar, who passed away on May 30. On Sunday, his relatives and close family members assembled at Korni Ghat, within the Rawanwadi Police jurisdiction, to perform the traditional post-death rituals.

Another woman who attempted to help also slipped into the water but was pulled to safety by a male relative present at the spot.

The incident occurred around 1.30 pm, prompting immediate response from the Rawanwadi Police. A large crowd gathered at the riverbank as news of the tragedy spread. With the help of local villagers and family members, police managed to recover the three bodies, which were then transported to the KTS District General Hospital in Gondia for post-mortem.

Rawanwadi Police have registered a case of accidental death. The investigation is being led by Police Inspector Vaibhav Pawar.
