Success & failure are part of life, be resilient: Mr. Shiv Shivakumar to MBA students

Nagpur:The new batch of 260 MBA and two Ph.D. students was inaugurated with Mr. Shiv Shivakumar, Operating Partner at Advent International, Gurgaon, Ex-Chairman & CEO- PepsiCo India, and Ex CEO, EM Nokia, to guide the ceremony held at IIM Nagpur on July 1, 2023.

Urging the students to keep the MBA from making them unidimensional, Mr. Shivakumar, in his commencement speech, insisted that they be multidimensional and be all-rounders in whatever they do. Listing the skills to be acquired to make a successful career, he said, “Be technology fluent, communicate well, avoid doing desk research projects instead go for live projects.”

While defining career as a marathon, Mr. Shiv Shivakumar advised the newly inducted batch of students to run in short sprints for a few years. He added that staying in one company and one industry is the surest way of not growing intellectually.

In his very engaging interaction style, Mr. Shiv Shivakumar informed the students that good networking would help them in the long run. It’s the strength of your network that will propel your career forward, not a degree or not just marks. Stay in touch with people, be responsive, be curious, he insisted.

Mr. Shivakumar concluded by advising the students to understand that success and failure are part of life, so they must be resilient. Measure your success through how many people and institutions you have helped.

In his opening speech, Dr.BhimarayaMetri, Director IIM Nagpur, introduced the gathering of students and their parents about the Institute’s journey to date and its future roadmap. He elaborated on the courses conducted at IIM Nagpur.

Students excelling in first-year MBA were awarded merit certificates during the ceremony. At the outset, Prof. Prakash Awasthy, Chairperson PGP, delivered the welcome speech while Prof. Satish Kumar, Chairperson Ph.D., proposed the vote of thanks.
